This was another of the anniversary year short stories where I felt that the story, where the premise was after all quite intriguing, could have used a whole lot more fleshing out.The Ripple Effect was certainly a perfectly fine little story, but for something that should have had some effect on the reader (at least that was the impression I got), an emotional impact of some sort, it left me to shrug and feel rather indifferent.
Also, and I can't really put my finger on the reasons, but somehow this story felt "younger" to me than the previous stories in this set - not in any particularly bad way, but just, well... part of not feeling quite as satisfying as it could have been. I realise these stories, as part of the Puffin anniversary project, are written so as to be accessible also for the youngest fans of the (new) show, but to me, the other stories, while not without their problems, have seemed more "aimed at everyone", not specifically the younger children.
In any case, this was the first thing by Malorie Blackman that I've read (although I've had some of her other work on my to be read list for a while), and while I could have hoped for a bit more, it does make me want to read her original fiction - I've heard nothing but good things about her YA novels.

Who'd've thunk it? Friendly, wise Daleks with sweet voices and friends with everybody. Ace is pleasantly surprised, but the Doctor doesn't believe it for a minute. So what gives? Read and find out.
A great short story. Should the universe be better with happy daleks. The doctor had to make a tough choice. But was it a good one, only time will tell. I love the seventh doctor and ace. I want more stories with them in it.
Often times when watching Dr. Who, you have to wonder about how his involvement or interference can affect the present and influence the future. This story gives an excellent example of that and also gives pause as to how our actions and influence can do the same.
Honestly started slow, but delved into a fast paced adventure with a solid grasp of the characters. You could hear their voices if you are familiar with the 7th Doctor and Ace dynamic. Worth a read.
This is one of the few books in this line that has a perfect handle on the era's respective characters. The Doctor is a great take on Sylvester McCoy's Seventh and Ace is written exceptionally more faithful to the in-series representation than some other spin-off media, which is fun.
The plot's just a thin excuse to explore the characters of the Doctor and Ace, but the book is part of a children's series that's mostly been disjointed reference-filled fluff, so it's not gonna be Shakespeare. It is better than "The Shakespeare Code" though, so there is that.
Malorie Blackman has shown that she knows one of the deeper aspects of the Seventh Doctor. His character had a clown like personality on the outside, but on the inside he had a sadness, a seriousness, and a loving nature that proved for the rest of the years that Doctor Who has lasted and the rest of the years it will last that the Doctor has a heart (or two). Thank you Malorie Blackman, and all the writers of Doctor Who who have contributed to Sylvester McCoy's Doctor, for adding extra heart to a wonderful story.
The 7th Doctor and Ace are trapped in space. The Doctor makes a final attempt to free them - and is successful, but has apparently sent them into a parallel universe. It's pretty easy to see that this universe is different, since the TARDIS lands on Skaro, and the Daleks welcome him to their University. Peaceful Daleks, helpful Daleks...what could be wrong with this scenario? Even Ace is happy with this new Dalek culture. But the Doctor knows that this isn't right, and he realizes that he has to fix it, and get off of Skaro before this world collapses.
